I Am What I Am: Why does everyone want to marry the prince?

By examining Tamada’s poignant portrayal of an asexual aromantic woman navigating societal expectations relating to gender, sexuality, and adulthood in Japan, this lecture delves deeply into how turning a blind eye to LGBTQIA+ issues, paradoxically renders queer people hyper visible in everyday life.

Guest speaker Michaela Luschmann [she/her] is a graduate researcher at the Asia Institute at the University of Melbourne. Her expertise lies in gender studies, discourse studies and linguistic anthropology. In her research, she investigates how contemporary masculinities are reproduced and enacted by social media creators in the Japanese seduction expert discourse.
