While working part-time at an Sumi-e ink painting exhibition, university student Sosuke (YOKOHAMA Ryusei) is suddenly invited by a renowned painter to become his apprentice. Though timid and surprised at first, Sosuke begins to attend the master’s studio. He is taught the basics of Sumi-e ink painting and quickly becomes absorbed in the art, but at the same time, he is carrying a deep burden that is holding him back. An encounter with Chiaki (KIYOHARA Kaya), the granddaughter of the painter and an up-and-coming painter herself, gradually changes Sosuke.
A young man’s wounded heart is restored by his profound fascination with Sumi-e—an art that renders the natural world and life itself in shades of black and white. The film’s appeal includes the unique characters in the world of traditional painting but also the live-painting sequences of Sumi-e. Sosuke and Chiaki are played by two popular young stars, YOKOHAMA Ryusei and KIYOHARA Kaya. The Director KOIZUMI Nori who made a big wave with the film Chihayafuru that was about a traditional Japanese card game, is back with a new coming-of-age story that once again incorporates Japanese traditional culture.
A fiatalember sebzett szívét helyreállítja a szumi-e iránti mélységes rajongása. A rendező Koizumi Nori, aki a Chihayafuru című filmjével nagy hullámot vetett a japán filmvilágban.

I loved this movie, it’s touching and opened my mind to new perspective of art, as an artist myself i couldn’t find my passion and style, and just can’t move on like the main character but I hope that I will soon, I also liked this kind of art style and want to try and learn more about it.

Me encantó.

Hmm… I was slightly disappointed. The depiction of the art form was stunning, but the plot was weak and portrayed a cliche of coming-of-age films. The cast was dull and uninspiring at best, with the exception of legendary TV actor Yosuke Eguchi who stood out gaudily like a sore thumb. I wish this film was a documentary on this art form.

Grazie infinite

It’s a beautiful picture. It’s a movie. And just as you can see, it’s a short story.

Ink painting art caused by the use of different brushes dipped in ink and then sliced into white paper to create beautiful lines and express emotions to suit the painter’s taste. And it was written as a story in this Japanese movie ‘The Lines That Define Me’

✨ This is the second time I’ve watched this film, and it has given me more to reflect on.

It’s clear why this film received the most attention among all the films on our 2024 list. It has everything to appeal to a wide audience: relatable story, powerful message, impressive cast, beautiful songs, and a vivid portrayal of Japanese life and culture.
The narrative centers on individuals engaged in an art form that may seem unfamiliar to the audience in our modern society, yet it manages to resonate deeply. Each character, from the leads to the supporting cast, possesses a distinct allure that captivates the viewers. Many, including myself, were particularly drawn to Mr. Nishihama, who, beneath his bodyguard facade, reveals the soul of a spontaneous, animal-loving, cheerful artist and a sagacious uncle.

After watching this film, I’m motivated to learn the song “Lost” by Yama. Hearing it in the film stirred such deep emotions in me that I was moved to tears.

When I was still a student, I always dread our calligraphy class. Aside from the mess that I’ll be making from the ink, my Chinese characters were not nice as well.

This movie brought back those memories, but instead of dread, I learned to appreciate the black ink and the infinite possibilities it could create depending on the person who’s handling it. 🙂 I jotted down a lot of unforgettable lines from this movie. Learned so much life lessons from it 🙂

“The Lines That Define Me” (2022), directed by KOIZUMI Nori, is a profound exploration of self-discovery, through the art of Sumi-e. The film illustrates that life’s essence cannot be fully captured by mere imitation of others. Each stroke, each line, is a representation of one’s personal trials, emotions, and growth. Simply superb!

    Beautiful movie,almost poetic,about traditional sumi-e paintings.

The German subtitles again had some dreadful mistakes that made certain parts very confusing (e.g.: Why does the woman “know” that the protagonist has two mothers/Mütter and how does she know that both of them are dead by just looking at his painting which had nothing to do with his family?; Later it is mentioned that the protagonists mothers/Mütter weren’t bad?? which didn’t make sense at all!), I wish there would have been a more rigorous revision for those kinds of mistakes.
But I really enjoyed this film so I didn’t mind watching it again after finally understanding what it was about. The scenery in this movie was beautiful and the sumi-e paintings were breath-taking. I didn’t know anything about it and was happy to be introduced to such a thing.

A wonderful story that makes you think about life. In addition, very well acted, very aesthetic images (both the sumi-e and the film locations) and the well-chosen lighting for the right atmosphere. A film that also teaches you something about Japanese culture and philosophy. Thank you for presenting this movie!

Although a simple storyline, the characterisation is as poignant as the art of Sumi-e. Superb camera work brings to life the characters and their emotions as much as the magic of master brush strokes on paper. Arigato!

The lines that defines us, a good metaphore of how the essence of ourselves makes us shine, and how we can this externalize throug different kind of arts like, for example greish sumi-e paintings, that can expell life and emotions indeed.

Bravo! what a delight for the eyes and the soul. Sumi-e: life, nature and our true essence interwoven. A white page and its infinite possibilities. Feelings are seeking to be seen through us, in the form of lines. While contempleting an artwork, Is not about labeling the technique or perfection but what moves you.

Thank you very much for giving me a chance to watch the online movie. I really enjoyed this meaningful movie. The most significant thing that I can learn from this movie is that everyone has their lines as their own lives. Imitation of others’ lines is not a good idea for perfect performance. Forgive our own past mistakes, then enjoy and celebrate what we have.
